Cheltenham Choral Society

Celebrating 70 Years of Making Music in 2008

Cheltenham Choral Society has been a significant part of Cheltenham's musical life since 1938 when Morgan Islwyn Jones founded the choir of dedicated choral singers.  The choir flourished under his leadership until his death in 1974, when Roger Smith took over and  continued the tradition of choral singing until 1988.

The repertoire of Cheltenham Choral Society extends from early music to new works some of which are composed by it’s Conductor and Musical Director, Ian Higginson, who was appointed in 1989.

In 2006, Ian received an Arts Council Award for his new composition 'In Times of Trouble' and for his contribution to music in Cheltenham.  He holds Fellowships from nine musical institutions both in the UK and abroad, three by examination and six honorary in recognition of his services to music as a conductor, composer, teacher and organist.

Our enthusiastic members enjoy singing in varied venues in and around Cheltenham, often with local schools including Leckhampton Primary School and Richard Pate Junior Choir, giving local children the experience of singing choral works with a four-part choir and orchestra.

Since 1993 the Society has been privileged to have Dame Felicity Lott as their President.  Earlier in her career Felicity sang with the Society, as did both her parents.  Her support and interest in the Society have been much appreciated and the Society has followed her international career with admiration.

Help us celebrate our anniversary this year by coming along to one of our concerts or by joining the ranks and singing with us!
